Controversy over NSP2 in new German government leaves chances for Ukraine - ambassador

The controversy over Nord Stream-2 in the new German government leaves chances for a positive solution for Ukraine in this issue. This opinion was expressed by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing an interview with the ambassador.

Andrey Melnik said that he considers the launch of the completed Russian gas pipeline unlikely before the end of winter. Especially considering that the certification process has been suspended and is unlikely to end before mid-2022.

In his opinion, Russia's reduction of gas supplies will not force the EU to abandon the procedures.

He also noted that the issue of Nord Stream 2, which was deliberately not included in the coalition agreement between the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Free Democrats because of the cardinal differences in positions, is still a topic of contention.

"After the creation of the coalition, the contradictions in the positions of these parties are again apparent. The Green Party opposed Nord Stream 2 from the first days, considering it a geopolitical project, unnecessary from an economic point of view and harmful from an environmental point of view. The Social Democrats say that the pipeline has already been built; we cannot bury it at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Now this dispute is coming to the surface - and it gives us a chance," believes Andrei Melnik.
