Biden calls Capitol storming in 2021 a coup attempt

U.S. President Joe Biden called the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, an attempted coup d'etat. He believes that former President Donald Trump supported it all. He said this during a speech in Atlanta, quoted by The Independent.

"The violent gang that former President Donald Trump supported and inspired on Jan. 6, 2021, sought through violence to get what Trump lost in the election," Biden said.

He said there was then an attempt to "impose the will of the gang, to throw away a free and fair election and, for the first time in American history, to stop a peaceful transition of power."

"That is why we are gathered here today. To speak out against the forces in America that value power over principles, the forces that attempted a coup, a coup against the legitimately expressed will of the American people, sowing doubt, inventing accusations and falsifications...," Biden stressed.

He noted that there was then an attempt to "steal the 2020 elections from the people."

"They failed, but there was no certainty about democracy or its future," Biden concluded.
