President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen proposes to reduce the average heating temperature in the EU by two degrees in order to get rid of dependence on Russian gas supplied by Nord Stream.

Von der Leyen said this in an interview with El Diario.

She noted that to reduce energy dependence on Russia, the EU has already adopted a plan to diversify energy sources REPowerEU, and also agreed to supply gas from the United States, Israel, Azerbaijan and Algeria.

"In addition, energy efficiency and energy savings play an important role. If we lower the heating or airing temperature in Europe by an average of two degrees, Europe will replace all gas supplies with Nord Stream," says the European Commission president.

Von der Leyen called the development of renewable energy sources another important step to strengthen EU energy security.

"This is both good for the climate and there is also our own energy source, which gives us independence and security of supply. What is planned for this year around the world is enough, for example, to meet all of Germany's energy needs," she explained.

Recall that in mid-June, the Russian concern "Gazprom" reduced the supply of gas to Germany through the pipeline "Nord Stream" by more than 40 percent. Later, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and France also notified about the reduction of gas supplies from Russia.

Due to the reduction of Russian gas supplies, Germany wants to introduce additional austerity measures. The Netherlands plans to lift restrictions on coal-fired power plants.
