Zelenskiy's team has been preparing for war since 2019 - Danilov

The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danilov, assures that Ukraine was preparing for a full-scale war - the preparations had allegedly been going on since December 2019. He said this in an interview with the Polish newspaper Wyborcza.

"For us, this (invasion) was not a surprise. We knew that sooner or later it would happen. We just did not expect that the Russians would attack from all sides at the same time. The attack on Belarus was a big test for us, although we also prepared for such a scenario ( ...) We have actually been preparing for war since December 2019 - and all claims that we have not been engaged in this are completely untrue. If we had not been preparing for war, today Russian tanks would be in Warsaw, Prague, Tallinn and Vilnius. Thanks to the fact that we restrained this offensive, thanks to the fact that we destroyed them here by tens or hundreds, today Europe lives a slightly different life," Danilov said.

According to the Secretary of the National Security Council, not telling the Ukrainian society about the approaching war was the right decision - but it will be possible to judge this by the results in some time.

"Today, after six months of war, we see that the right scenario was chosen. We did not allow the internal destabilization that Putin was counting on. It is difficult to imagine the consequences if we told society: tomorrow you will be killed. That way we would lose the state. And then we would Putin's plans were implemented. But we were preparing society. You saw the rise of patriotic sentiments in mid-February," he added.

According to Danilov, Russia expected that President Volodymyr Zelensky would leave Ukraine, but he decided to stay in Kyiv, and safe working conditions were prepared for him in advance.

The Secretary of the National Security Council also stated that the Kremlin did not start its aggression in February 2014 with the annexation of Crimea, but in August 2008 in Georgia.

"We believe that the Russian aggression began in August 2008 in Georgia. It was a brazen operation to seize part of the territory of Georgia. In 2008, Putin threw off all his masks and declared that he would go to war to change the borders of the country established in 1991 . year," summarized Danilov.
