The heads of foreign affairs of Azerbaijan and Armenia held talks in Geneva

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and Armenia held talks in Geneva on October 2.

This is stated in the communique of both parties.

The Armenian side notes that the head of the Foreign Ministry, Ararat Mirzoyan, insisted on the withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from the territory of Armenia and the release of prisoners of war. The ministers discussed the peace treaty between the countries, ensuring the rights and guarantees of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, in particular by creating a special negotiation mechanism between Stepanakert and Baku. The introduction of international mechanisms for monitoring the border situation was also discussed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan notes that they offered Yerevan their vision of a peace agreement based on five principles, and that in view of the latest escalation, they proposed to hold a meeting on border demarcation earlier - in October instead of November.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, insisted on the "complete withdrawal of the armed units of Armenia from the territory of Azerbaijan", the establishment of transport links and communications, and progress in border demarcation issues.

The previous high-level meeting took place on August 31 in Brussels - when Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met through the mediation of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

It will be recalled that two large-scale escalations took place between Azerbaijan and Armenia in recent months.

The first resulted in Yerevan transferring control over the strategically important Lachin Corridor to Baku. Another - the shelling of border areas - led to a strengthening of the US role in the region.
