Budapest said it had "sold" its demands for a new package of EU sanctions against Russia

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto said that Budapest had obtained exemptions from price restrictions on Russian oil, which should be included in the new package of sanctions against Russia.

"The meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives ended in Brussels, with sanctions again on the agenda. (...) We stubbornly negotiated and achieved the fact that the oil price ceiling does not apply to crude oil transported by pipelines (this is how we buy crude oil , which is necessary for our energy security), and in case of an emergency does not apply to sea-transported replacement, we managed to remove nuclear energy from the sanctions, therefore these sanctions do not apply to the construction of the new Paksh NPP, - Sijarto said in Facebook.

Also, according to him, "no institution, which is important for cooperation in the field of nuclear research and development, was included in the list of sanctions."

He said that in this way Budapest "prevented sanctions measures that threaten the security of the Hungarian energy supply and harm the Hungarian people" and that this will continue.

EU ambassadors have reportedly reached an agreement on new sanctions against Russia, including price caps on the sale of Russian oil, according to seven European diplomats. The final details of the deal, which will put a dent in oil revenues, are due to be put in writing on October 5.
