Stoltenberg: The Russian Federation wants to freeze the war for a large-scale offensive in the spring

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Russia shows no signs of a desire for a peaceful end to the war against Ukraine and is trying to freeze it before the start of a larger attack in the spring, writes the Financial Times.

Stoltenberg said that while the war will likely enter a quieter phase in the winter, both sides will seek to regroup and rearm their forces, so NATO countries should continue to provide support to Ukraine.

"There are no conditions (for a diplomatic solution) now," Stoltenberg told the FT's Global Boardroom event on Wednesday, adding that Russia showed no signs of wanting a peaceful end to the war. "The more we want a peaceful solution, the more urgent is the need to provide military support to Ukraine," NATO Secretary General noted.

"Russia is trying to freeze" the conflict, Stoltenberg said, before "launching a larger offensive in the spring."

"Now Ukraine has momentum," Stoltenberg said, adding that in the capitals of NATO countries, "they are constantly considering what systems (weapons) we want to supply" to Kyiv.
