The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is disappointed with the decision of the Tbilisi court regarding Saakashvili

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is disappointed by the decision of the Tbilisi City Court to reject the request of Mikheil Saakashvili's defense for a postponement or exemption from punishment due to a serious health condition.

This is stated in the commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, published on Tuesday.

As noted in the ministry, the court did not take into account the doctors' opinion about the severity of Saakashvili's illness. He also refused to transfer him abroad for treatment.

"The Georgian authorities should immediately stop settling political accounts with the Ukrainian citizen, guarantee the observance of his rights and hand him over to Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine will continue to protect the interests of Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili, who should be released," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

On February 6, the city court of Tbilisi did not satisfy the request of the lawyers of the imprisoned ex-president of Georgia and citizen of Ukraine Saakashvili for early release due to his health.

Lawyers tried to argue that Saakashvili's life depends on the decision. Saakashvili himself was not even remotely due to ill health.

Last week, Saakashvili showed in court how he lost weight during his imprisonment. After that, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi accused the Georgian authorities of "trying and killing" Saakashvili, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly protested the inhumane treatment of Saakashvili and demanded that he be handed over to Kyiv.

The Verkhovna Rada prepared an appeal calling for Saakashvili to be transferred for treatment abroad.
