The Parliament of Georgia prematurely started consideration of one of the scandalous projects about "foreign agents"

The Parliament of Georgia prematurely started consideration of the project "On transparency of foreign influence" at the plenary session on March 7.

 This is reported by "News-Georgia".

The legislature was originally expected to begin the hearing on March 9, but Majority Leader Mamuka Mdynaradze suggested "no more waiting" and the speaker of the parliament supported him.

Discussions began in the absence of the majority of opposition deputies.

Before that, Prime Minister Iraklii Garibashvili came out in support of the scandalous draft laws on "foreign agents", which caused criticism from the West and protests, saying that the country's future "does not belong to the agents of foreign states".

It will be recalled that the projects were submitted by the "Power of the People" group, which broke away from the ruling "Georgian Dream", but remains in the majority. On March 6, the Committee of the Georgian Parliament on Legal Issues supported two versions of high-profile bills.

Consideration of both documents took place for several hours against the background of a fight between deputies and protests under the parliament building.

The EU states that these initiatives contradict at least two of the 12 recommendations for Georgia's EU candidate status.

The US State Department has already expressed serious concern several times. Several hundred non-governmental organizations and mass media of Georgia signed a statement against the adoption of such a law in Georgia.

After the approval of the two projects in the first reading in the parliament, the ruling party promises to send both options to the Venice Commission for examination.
