The ombudsman announced the inappropriate actions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs during the dispersal of the rally in Tbilisi

People's Defender of Georgia Levan Yoseliani said that serious violations were committed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs during the dispersal of the rally in Tbilisi.

Yoseliani was elected to the ombudsman post just days ago amid protests over the "foreign agents" law, promising to be "politically impartial". His candidacy was supported by the ruling party and part of the opposition.

As Yoseliani stated at the briefing, the main part of the rally was peaceful and there were no grounds for using force against the peaceful part of the rally on Rustaveli Avenue.

"The violent actions of some of the participants of the action near the official entrances to the parliament became the reason for the unjustified termination of the entire rally by law enforcement officers," Yoseliani said.

The ombudsman noted that the police should have used individual and proportionate measures in cases of violence, but in response they used special means against peaceful demonstrators.
