US drone flights further away from Crimea affect intelligence gathering

The US decision to change the flight routes of drones over the Black Sea due to the incident with the Russian fighter jets limits the collection of intelligence data.

This was stated by an unnamed high-ranking US military official in a comment to CNN.

According to him, the flights of drones at a greater distance from the temporarily occupied Crimea reduce the quality of intelligence related to the war in Ukraine. He added that spy satellites can compensate for the problem to some extent, but their time over the targets is shorter.

He noted that the US will not fly as close to the peninsula as before in order to avoid provocations, but "there is already a desire" to return to the old routes.

At the same time, Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder refused to comment on such information about the change in the quality of intelligence.

"We are not going to discuss missions, routes or timing of operations. We are also not going to discuss intelligence operations," he said.
