It should be noted that the loss by the Russian military of an Su-34 fighter-bomber, a Su-35 fighter and two Mi-8 helicopters, which fell on May 13, 2023 in the Bryansk region, was not taken into account in the reports of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
However, the Ministry of Defense of Russia claims that the Ukrainian side is spreading false information about the losses of Russian troops.
According to the assessment of the British Ministry of Defense, the irreversible losses of the Russian army and private military companies operating against Ukraine in the first year of the full-scale war (from February 24, 2022) amounted to 175-200 thousand people. Among them, losses in killed - 40-60 thousand. The British Ministry of Defense notes the high mortality rate among wounded Russian servicemen, associating it with the "extremely primitive medical provision of most of the forces."
The report also notes that the level of Russian casualties has increased significantly since September 2022, when "partial mobilization" was introduced in Russia. "Wagner PMC forces engaged a large number of prisoner recruits. The casualty rate among them probably reaches 50%," the report says. According to the assessment of British military intelligence, the cause of most of the losses of the Russian army was Ukrainian artillery.
Confirmed losses of the Russian army and pro-Russian military structures in Ukraine (we are talking about data from open sources collected by the editors of "Mediazona") amount to about 23,300 people killed. Researchers admit that real losses may be several times higher. The publication says: "The real number of dead may be several times higher. In addition, the number of missing and captured is unknown."
According to the Oryx project, which estimates the loss of equipment during this war based on documentary evidence, by April 2023 the Russian army had lost more than 10,000 units of military equipment (tanks, other armored vehicles, etc.).
According to confirmed UN data, since February 24, about 8,900 Ukrainian civilians have died (including about 500 minors), and more than 15,000 have been injured. At the same time, the UN emphasizes that it is only about verified incidents, and the real numbers are "much higher." Ukrainian authorities claim that tens of thousands of peaceful Ukrainians were killed (the largest number of victims in Mariupol, according to local authorities, more than 20,000).
