The ambassadors of the EU countries announced a démarche to Georgia due to the resumption of air connections with Russia

The ambassadors of all 27 European Union states announced a démarche to the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy of Georgia Levan Davitashvili due to the resumption of air connections between Moscow and Tbilisi.

This happened during a meeting of ambassadors from Davitashvili in Georgia, writes the local publication Interpressnews.ge.

"We informed Davitashvili that we regret the decision of the Georgian government to resume direct air traffic with Russia. We reported that this decision contradicts the unanimous decision of all 27 EU members not to make direct flights to and from Russia and not to allow Russian aircraft to fly over the territory of EU member states," EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavlo Gerchynskyi told reporters.

Davitashvili assured the European ambassadors that sanctioned Russian companies will not operate flights, and all arriving Russians will be thoroughly checked. At the same time, he added that Georgia has a direct border with Russia and "the context of Georgia is different from the context of the EU countries." Davitashvili emphasized that European countries continue to trade with Russia.

"European countries continue trade with Russia even after the start of the war in Ukraine. Some of them are trading more, some are reducing trade," said Levan Davitashvili.

On December 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin canceled the visa regime for Georgian citizens and lifted the ban on Russian airlines flying to Georgia. The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, called Russia's cancellation of the visa regime a provocation. At the same time, the Georgian government supported Putin's decision. Deputy Economy Minister of Georgia Mariam Kryvishvili said that the country will allow direct flights to Russian airlines that are not under sanctions. On May 20, Georgians protested against the resumption of air traffic from Russia.
