The Seimas of Latvia did not elect a president on the second attempt, one candidate is eliminated

The second round of voting for the new president of Latvia did not determine the winner, but according to its results, one of the three candidates, Elina Pinto, is eliminated from the competition.

 This is reported by Delfi.

In the first and second round of voting by deputies, none of the three candidates received the necessary number of votes to win.

According to the rules, after the second round, the candidate with the least support is eliminated from the competition. Such a candidate was Elina Pinto, who was nominated by the Social Democrats: 10 votes were cast for her.

Therefore, in the third round, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkevičs and businessman Uldis Pilens are competing. In the second round, they received 42 and 25 votes, respectively.

The result could determine how the Progresīvie Social Democrats will vote after their candidate dropped out.

If Rinkevichs gets the party's votes, he can win with 52 votes - from "New Unity", "Union of Greens and Peasants" and Social Democrats.

At the same time, there are rumors that some deputies from the "United List", which supports Pilens, may vote for Rinkevichs for the stability of the coalition.
