Tato Bigvava,27, has been killed in the Azovstal plant of Ukraine reportedly by a cluster bomb dropped by the Russian military,

Earlier Bigvava secured a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of children and the elderly from the shelter of the plant, shortly before the incident.

He contacted his family for the last time on May 7.

Bigvava led one of the divisions of the Azov regiment which was opposing the Russian military in the worst-affected city of Mariupol.

After graduating from the Ukrainian Military Academy, he enlisted in the regiment back in 2014, and about a month ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded him the Order of Courage.

Bigvava family is an IDP from Sokhumi, a city in Georgia’s currently Russian occupied Abkhazia region.

His body is still in the plant.

The Azov regiment is defending the Ukrainian town of Mariupol which has been besieged by Russian troops since February 2022.

In the city which has been fully destroyed by the Russian military, the plant is the only stronghold.

Ten Georgian fighters have been killed by Russian troops in Ukraine since the beginning of hostilities on February 24.
