Tragedy struck the village of Lusikisiki in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province as 17 people were killed in mass shootings at two separate homes, authorities confirmed on Saturday. The South African Police Service (SAPS) launched a large-scale manhunt to capture the perpetrators responsible for the brutal attacks.

The shootings claimed the lives of 15 women and two men. In the first home, 13 victims were killed, including 12 women and one man. Four more victims were found dead at a nearby homestead. Police have yet to determine the motive behind the killings, which have shocked the country already grappling with one of the highest murder rates globally.

With around 20,000 murders recorded annually in a population exceeding 60 million, South Africa continues to battle high levels of violent crime. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation intensifies.
