Head of Georgia’s State Inspector’s Service Londa Toloraia says that the recent reform in the agency and its division served the goal to remove her from the position.

“Actually the goal is reached. I am leaving starting March,” Toloraia said after the meeting with foreign ambassadors earlier today.

She reiterated that the changes in the agency, which were proposed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, did not serve the goal to empower the Inspector’s Service as ‘no new functions or levers have been added.’

Toloraia believes that the move was personally against her for ‘the unbiased reports and decisions’ issued and made by the agency, including on the topics of imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili.

US Ambassador Kelly Degnan says that losing professionals like Toloraia is very unfavorable for the country and only weakens the system.

EU Ambassador Carl Hartzell stated that he has already expressed his concern over the ‘hasty and non inclusive’ procedures over the State Inspector’s Service.

“The EU has invested much for the empowerment of the agency,” Hartzell said.

The State Inspector’s Service was created in 2018 to investigate alleged offenses by law enforcement officers and agencies.

According to the amendments recently proposed by the ruling party the agency has been divided into two agencies – one which will investigate the alleged offenses and another for the protection of personal data.
