The lawyer representing Giorgi Chigladze, who was arrested following an altercation at a hotel in Georgia’s eastern city of Telavi, claims his client was the “victim of a provocation” by Russian guests and was also injured during the incident.
In a statement published on social media, defence lawyer Lasha Kapanadze said the confrontation began after a group of Russian-speaking holidaymakers allegedly disrupted a wedding by shouting, throwing liquids and spitting at guests from an upper floor. According to the lawyer, Chigladze went to speak to the group, where a physical altercation ensued, during which he sustained neck injuries. The defence has requested a forensic medical examination.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs previously announced that officers from the Kakheti Police Department had arrested one person on suspicion of intentional minor bodily injury. The investigation is being conducted under Article 120 of Georgia's Criminal Code, an offence punishable by up to three years' imprisonment.
Chigladze is currently being held in a temporary detention facility in Gurjaani while prosecutors prepare formal charges.
