Armenia approves bill to begin EU accession process

The Armenian government has approved a draft law to formally initiate the process of joining the European Union, according to reports from local media. The proposal was presented during a cabinet session on Thursday by Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

Mirzoyan highlighted the growing ties between Armenia and the EU in recent years, pointing to political support from Brussels, including the deployment of an EU Civilian Monitoring Mission in Armenia. “The European Union has consistently demonstrated its commitment to supporting democracy in Armenia, as well as its readiness to assist in strengthening economic stability,” he said.

Armenia’s Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, recently told the European Parliament that the country is prepared to deepen its relationship with the EU as far as the bloc considers feasible. The foreign minister also noted progress in ongoing discussions, including steps toward visa liberalization for Armenian citizens.

The EU’s strong democratic institutions and advanced economic frameworks were cited by Mirzoyan as key motivators for Armenia’s push to align more closely with European standards.
