The acting US Ambassador to Georgia, Alan Purcell, on Thursday paid tribute to those killed during the April 9 tragedy.

In a statement, the US Embassy in Georgia commemorated the victims of the 1989 events, when Soviet forces violently dispersed peaceful demonstrators in the capital city of Tbilisi.

“On April 9, we remember the brutality committed by the Soviet army in 1989. Today, 37 years later, we honour the 21 Georgians who lost their lives and the hundreds who were injured while participating in a peaceful demonstration for Georgia’s freedom,” the statement said.
