Australia has announced it will donate 49 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine, as part of a broader package aimed at helping Kyiv resist Russia’s invasion. The package, valued at $245 million, is set to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities, enhancing its firepower and mobility in coordination with support from other international partners.

Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, Pat Conroy, is expected to make the formal offer to Ukraine at a NATO meeting in Brussels. The plan may involve upgrading some of the tanks before their transfer or potentially using parts from some vehicles to support others.

Minister Conroy affirmed Australia’s commitment to Ukraine, stating: “We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine in their fight against Russia’s illegal invasion.”

He emphasized that this move would further strengthen Ukraine’s armored brigades and ensure global cooperation in facing geostrategic challenges.
