MEP Bernard Guetta has said that Georgia will not be able to return to the path of democracy and European Union integration until Russia is defeated in Ukraine.
Speaking during a discussion of the European Parliament’s report on Georgia at the Foreign Affairs Committee, Guetta argued that the country’s political trajectory was closely linked to the outcome of the war.
“We must look at the situation objectively. Georgia will not return to the path of democracy and the European Union until Russia and Putin are defeated in Ukraine,” he said. “The conclusion is simple: in order to help Georgia, we must help Ukraine.”
The report on Georgia was presented to the committee by Rasa Jukneviciene. The document supports the introduction of targeted sanctions and welcomes the activation of the OSCE’s “Moscow Mechanism,” as well as the suspension of visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
