Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili has been arrested in Tbilisi, Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili has confirmed.

Front News says that he was arrested two hours ago in Sanzona district, outskirts of Tbilisi and allegedly opposition leaders are connected with the arrest.

Garibashvili says that Georgian law enforcers have been aware of Saakashvili’s plans and the detention took place on the location which would decrease any possible threats.

Saakashvili has already been transported to prison.

The former president has been convicted in Georgia for abuse of authority and the case connected with the beating of businessman Valeri Gelashvil.

He has not returned to Georgia since 2013.

Saakashvili released a video yesterday and said he was in Batumi. However, the GD officials and the Interior Ministry claimed Saakashvikli had not crossed into georgia.
