Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat for foreign affairs and security, on Friday said security responsibilities in the Strait of Hormuz should not fall on Europe alone, arguing that international security cooperation must be reciprocal.

Speaking in an interview with CNN, Kallas responded to criticism from the United States and Gulf countries over Europe’s perceived limited involvement in ensuring maritime security in the region.

She stressed that global security partnerships must be based on mutual support, pointing in particular to what she described as insufficient engagement from Gulf states in addressing challenges linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“We have not seen help from Gulf countries regarding Russia; this cannot be a one-way street,” Kallas said.
