Concerns grow over deteriorating health of jailed media manager Amaglobeli

The Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) has raised alarm over the deteriorating health of journalist and media founder Mzia Amaglobeli, who has been on a hunger strike for 19 days.

According to GYLA, authorities have failed to provide essential medical documentation regarding her condition, prompting serious concerns about her well-being.

In a statement, GYLA noted that Amaglobeli, the founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, is now struggling to travel even short distances required to meet with her lawyer. Despite multiple requests, her legal team has not been given access to medical reports detailing her condition.

“The relevant agencies are withholding critical information about her health, which is especially concerning given that she has chronic illnesses and serious vision problems. There is a risk that her condition could further deteriorate,” the statement reads.

The Public Defender’s Office has been informed of Amaglobeli’s hunger strike, and a medical representative from the office has reportedly conducted certain tests. However, neither the specific tests performed nor their results have been disclosed.

GYLA has urged the Public Defender to take immediate action, including:

Conducting daily monitoring of Amaglobeli’s health condition;

Ensuring full access to her medical documentation;

Requesting all relevant health and hunger strike records from the penitentiary service;

Assessing whether she requires multidisciplinary medical assistance;
Guaranteeing regular visits from medical professionals.

The lawyers emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling for immediate intervention to prevent further health deterioration and potential irreversible consequences.
