Matikashvili accused the European Union of exerting pressure on Georgian society through “a fake report” that failed to properly acknowledge the country’s progress

A senior Georgian lawmaker has criticized the European Commission’s latest enlargement report, calling it “false, biased, and anti-Georgian.”

Davit Matikashvili, chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Wednesday claimed the document was “filled with blatant lies and rhetoric hostile to Georgia,” and suggested that the report aimed to undermine the country’s European aspirations.

“The entire report was falsified from start to finish. It creates the impression that everything is being done to push Georgia away from its European perspective,” Matikashvili said.

He argued that many findings were “out of touch with reality,” citing references to Georgia’s alleged lack of support for Ukraine-related resolutions in international organizations as an example.

Matikashvili accused the European Union of exerting pressure on Georgian society through “a fake report” that failed to properly acknowledge the country’s progress.

“Often they do not even mention the substantial progress Georgia has made - progress that in many cases outperforms not only EU candidate states but even member states,” he stated. “It is difficult to interpret this as anything other than an unfriendly attitude towards our country and our people.”

The MP said the criticism reflected a “deliberate attempt” to shape negative public opinion in Georgia.
