A devastating Russian airstrike on the central district of Sumy has left over 20 people dead and several others injured, according to local officials. The attack occurred early Saturday morning and targeted civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings.
Artem Kobzar, acting mayor of Sumy, confirmed the heavy toll in a statement: “Many have died as a result of the airstrike. The enemy has once again targeted peaceful civilians.”
The Sumy Regional Administration reported that the strike involved two ballistic missiles, causing extensive damage to homes in the city center. Emergency responders are continuing search and rescue operations at the site.
This is not the first time Sumy has come under attack. In late March, another strike on the city center wounded at least 65 people, including 14 children.
The assault is part of a broader escalation. Just hours earlier, eight people were injured in a Russian attack on the Kharkiv region, where a residential building in Kupiansk was partially destroyed by shelling. Ukrainian Air Defense Forces reported that Russia launched 55 drones across the country overnight.
Ukrainian authorities have condemned the attacks as deliberate acts of terror against civilians, calling for stronger international support and enhanced air defense capabilities.
