Deadly wildfires rage in Los Angeles, 10 dead, thousands evacuated

A large-scale forest fire has been raging in Los Angeles, California, for the fourth consecutive day, rapidly spreading to populated areas fueled by strong winds.

At least 10 people have lost their lives due to the wildfires, and tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated from the affected areas. By the end of January 9, firefighters were battling the blaze across five districts, with the fire having already destroyed over 10,000 homes and other structures.

The Pacific Palisades region has been particularly hard hit by the flames. In response to the disaster, US President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in California, instructing federal agencies to provide full support and assistance to the state. President Biden also postponed his planned visit to Italy to manage the wildfire crisis.

The wildfires of January 2025 are being described as the deadliest in Los Angeles history. Climate change-induced wildfires have become a recurring issue across California, with over 8,000 wildfires reported in the state in 2024 alone, consuming around 1,000 acres of land.
