The Public Defender of Georgia on Tuesday expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of life caused by heavy snowfall in the country’s western region of Guria, offering condolences to the grieving families.
Recent reports have revealed that several villages in the area remain isolated, with citizens, including vulnerable elderly and children, facing severe challenges such as power outages, food shortages, and the risk of building collapses. Additionally, multiple injuries have been reported.
The Public Defender called on both central and local authorities to take “urgent and coordinated” action, deploying the necessary resources and following the relevant legislation to protect human life, health, and property during emergencies caused by natural disasters.
“The extreme weather conditions have underscored significant gaps in the management of emergency situations”, the Public Defender said.
Levan Ioseliani’s office further criticized the lack of effective preventive measures, risk management strategies, and proper planning for such natural events, particularly in municipalities prone to such risks.
The failures, according to the Public Defender, “directly affect citizens’ safety, health, and property rights”. The institution has pledged to continue monitoring and ensuring the protection of the rights under its mandate.
