A dutch doctor has already arrived in Georgia, while a group of Ukrainian doctors will visit the country tomorrow to monitor the health of third president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike for 26 days, Saakashvili’s lawyer stated earlier today.

Lawyer Giorgi Gelkhauri says that as of now Saakashvili’s health condition is satisfactory. However, it may worsen at any time.

Saakashvili is ready to be brought to a civil clinic. However, the prison administration and the Ministry of Justice say that he may be transferred to a prison clinic only.

The United National Movement opposition party has already urged the international community and local NGOs to exercise pressure on the government to allow Saakashvili’s transfer to a multi-profile civil hospital.

Saakashvili, who is a citizen of Ukraine and currently chairs the Ukrainian National Reforms Council, returned to Georgia after eight years in political exile just ahead of the October 2 municipal elections in Georgia.

His goal is to help his United National Movement party replace the Georgian Dream government.

Saakashvili was convicted in Georgia in absentia back in 2018 for abuse of authority and was sentenced to six years in prison.

He has also been charged with four other offences which are still in courts.
