The European Parliament adopted a report on Wednesday, addressing the role of preventive diplomacy in addressing frozen conflicts globally and called on EU bodies to take more robust actions to tackle them, the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and deal with the aftermath of the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
The document emphasized Russia’s “illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified war of aggression” against Ukraine and Georgia in August 2008. The repercussions of these conflicts underscore the imperative for the EU to exhibit stronger, more ambitious, credible, strategic, tangible, and unified action on the global stage. It emphasizes the need for the EU to autonomously establish strategic objectives and develop the necessary capabilities, aiming to prevent the repetition of past mistakes and learning from them for upcoming challenges.
Furthermore, the report underscored the EU’s obligation to allocate sufficient financial resources to address rapidly increasing geopolitical challenges. It advocated for increased investments in preventive diplomacy and other conflict prevention measures to curb the spread of conflicts, recognizing their adverse impact on the social and economic development of affected areas.
