Erdogan wins election runoff

Turkish incumbent president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won Sunday’s election runoff, defeating his opposition opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu. With 99.43% of the votes counted,  Erdogan garnered 52.14% of the votes, while Kilicdaroglu received 47.86%.

 

In his address, Erdogan said it was time to “put aside all the debates and conflicts during the election period and unite around our national goals and dreams.”

 

“We are not the only winners, the winner is Turkey. The winner is all parts of our society, our democracy is the winner,” Erdogan said.

 

Kilicdaroglu said what “truly” made him sad  was “the hard days ahead for our country.”
