Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has warned of increasing authoritarianism in Georgia, saying recent developments are leading to more repression and the elimination of civic space.

”More negative developments towards consolidating authoritarianism in Georgia, paving the way for further repressions & eliminating the civic space,” Tsahkna wrote on X.

His statement follows a joint warning from EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who expressed grave concerns over Georgia’s new Foreign Agents Registration Act and Law on Broadcasting.

The EU officials criticized the laws for being adopted without proper public consultations. They accused the Georgian Government of using them to suppress dissent, restrict fundamental freedoms, and silence independent media.
