Markus Ederrer, the EU ambassador to Moscow, said to Russian media on Wednesday that it would be his last day in that office.

He has not explained why he made this decision.

Ederer stressed Russia’s role in issues like climate change and student exchange when summarizing his work.

The ambassador stressed the importance of European support for Russian citizens. ”We tried to protect the space that the government was increasingly restricting, including freedom of expression”, said Ederer.

Ederer was appointed as the EU’s ambassador to Moscow on May 16, 2017.

It is unclear who might take Ederer’s place as EU ambassador to Russia.
