Following a series of sharp statements from members of the ruling Georgian Dream party, the European Union has issued a strong statement reaffirming its support for EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, and condemning the 'disinformation campaign' led by Georgian officials.

EU foreign affairs and security policy spokesperson Anuare El Anouar, speaking on behalf of the European Union, rejected what he called “baseless accusations and deliberate disinformation” from Georgian authorities regarding the EU’s role in the country.

“Recent statements falsely claiming that the EU seeks to destabilize Georgia, drag it into war, or impose so-called ‘non-traditional values’ constitute a deliberate attempt to mislead the public,” the statement reads.

The EU criticized the use of “Russian-style conspiracy theories and divisive narratives,” stressing that such rhetoric undermines EU-Georgia relations and only benefits those who oppose the country's democratic and European aspirations.

The statement also strongly denounced personal attacks on Ambassador Herczyński, stating he plays a vital role in fostering EU-Georgia relations and continues to enjoy the full trust and support of the European Union.

“We urge all political actors in Georgia to refrain from spreading disinformation, avoid inflammatory personal attacks, and work towards the European future for its population,” the EU added.

The EU reiterated its longstanding support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and democratic development, pledging continued solidarity with the Georgian people.

The EU’s remarks follow repeated criticism of Ambassador Herczyński by Georgian Dream officials. On June 23, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze described Herczyński as a “tragic figure” who is not being allowed to perform his duties as an ambassador. Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze went as far as to say, “If it were up to me, I would expel him,” during a July 24 interview.

Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili also accused the ambassador of justifying violence after Herczyński criticized the arrests of protest participants, stating that their detention was unfair.

Earlier, Herczyński had emphasized that Georgia’s return to the EU path requires “an end to repressions, the release of unjustly detained individuals, and the repeal of repressive legislation.”
