The EU leaders have agreed to allow Ukraine to become a member of the bloc, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda said on Friday.
The solution on granting a candidate country status to Ukraine came more than ten days after Ukraine submitted an official application for this.
“After five hours of heated discussions EU leaders said yes to Ukrainian EU integration. The process started. Now it is up to us and Ukrainians to accomplish it fast. Heroic Ukrainian nation deserves to know that they are welcome in the EU,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda tweeted on Friday.

However, according to reports the European Union refused Kyiv’s appeal for rapid accession and differed over the reach of sanctions against Moscow.
Georgia and Moldova have also applied for EU membership. It is expected that Georgia may receive the candidate country status later than Ukraine despite being far ahead in reforms because of the Russia-Ukraine war.
