The EU intends to transfer additional military equipment to Moldova which is facing threats amid Russia’s large-scale military intervention against Ukraine.
“We will help Moldova strengthen its resilience and cope with the consequences of the spill-over from Russia’s aggression in Ukraine by providing additional military equipment and by helping to counter disinformation and withstand cyber-attacks,” European Council President Charles Michel said at a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Wednesday.
Sandu welcomed Michel in Chisinau “in these challenging times for Moldova and the region.”
“We are grateful for all the EU’s solidarity and support. We are ready to deepen our cooperation and advance our EU accession bid for the benefit of our citizens,” Sandu stated.
The EU official did not specify the amount of the aid or what kind of equipment Moldova would receive.
In late April, a series of terrorist attacks took place in the separatist Transnistrian region of Moldova which, according to Chisinau, may have been organized and carried out by external forces that want to drag Moldova in a war.
Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova applied for EU membership shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.
