The European Union has officially lifted its economic sanctions on Syria, marking a significant shift in its policy toward the war-torn country. The move was confirmed by senior EU officials on May 20, 2025, as part of a broader effort to support Syria’s recovery and reconciliation process.
“Today, we took the decision to lift our economic sanctions on Syria,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas announced on social media. “We want to help the Syrian people rebuild a new, inclusive and peaceful Syria. The EU has always stood by Syrians throughout the last 14 years – and will keep doing so.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed support for the decision, stating, “The path to recovery is still long, but Europe is ready to work with Syria along the way. We want to be partners in Syria’s growth, alongside our allies in the region and beyond. Reconciliation is the first, crucial step towards reconstruction.”
