Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell says that the Georgian government carries a major role, however, both the government and the opposition should take steps to ease escalation in the country and support a constructive reform agenda.
Borrel stated this in a letter written in response to the Georgian opposition who addressed the EU official in early December, criticizing the ruling Georgian Dream party for its withdrawal from the April 2021 EU-mediated agreement.
The ruling party said that it left the agreement in July because the main opposition party, the United National Movement, refused to join it.
The agreement obliged the signatories to carry out large-scale judiciary and electoral reforms.
In the letter released today Borrell says that Georgia should carry out the reforms ‘in a timely fashion’ to further strengthen the country’s European course.
