Ex-pm Gakharia: municipal elections ‘a step back’

Former Prime Minister of Georgia under the Georgian Dream (GD) leadership Giorgi Gakharia, who is currently running the For Georgia opposition party, says that the October 2 municipal elections in Georgia ‘were neither free nor fair.’
In his Twitter post Gakharia claimed that the party ‘will act in the best interests of Georgia and for the country’s Euro-Atlantic future.’

Gakharia’s For Georgia party came third in the proportional part of the municipal poll with almost eight percent of the vote, while Gakharia himself also came third in the Tbilisi mayoral race.
He quit the premiership and the ruling party back in February 2021 and founded the new party in May of the year.
Gakharia has been frequently described ‘as a traitor’ by the GD officials.
His party member Kakhaber Kemoklidze said that For Georgia will support neither the GD nor the United National Movement opposition party in the mayoral runoffs for 20 of 64 constituencies on October 30.
