The For Georgia party founded by former Prime Minister under the Georgian Dream (GD) authorities Giorgi Gakharia says that they will not support the creation of a parliamentary investigative commission over imprisoned ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili as “it is in the interests of the ruling party.”

The United National Movement (UNM) opposition party MP Roman Gotsiridze called on the For Georgia party today to support the creation of the commission as “only one signature is needed” for this.

“Our position is unchanged. We will not support the creation of the commission as the ruling party will use its presence to overshadow the problems which trouble the public,” Beka Liluashvili, a member of the For Georgia party said on Tuesday.

The UNM says that 49 MPs are for the creation of the commission which, if set up if even one MP joins in the 150-member parliament, would investigate alleged inhuman treatment towards Saakashvili while in prison.

The UNM party says that Saakashvili is “on the verge of death due to poor treatment,” while the Georgian authorities state that Saakashvili is receiving all needed services.
