Former PM Giorgi Gakharia’s For Georgia party member Giga Parulava has been elected a new head of Zugdidi city assembly in western Georgia.

The city assembly is one of seven across the country where the ruling Georgian Dream party was unable to gain the majority.

The United National Movement opposition party supported Parulava in the role, while the ruling party refused to participate in the vote.

It is the second city assembly after Tsalenjikha, also in Samegrelo region, where the For Georgia party member became a chair.

The ruling party was able to form a majority in city assemblies of 56 municipalities of total 64.

Gakharia quit premiership and the ruling party shortly after the 2020 parliamentary elections due to controversies with the ruling party leaders.

The ruling party has accused Gakharia of treason and making a coalition with the United National Movement.
