Imprisoned former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili was transported to Vivamedi Clinic in Tbilisi for treatment on Thursday, following an offer from the country’s Justice Ministry earlier this week.
The transfer took place in the wake of reports by the family and Saakashvili himself that the health of the third president has “deteriorated seriously” over the past several days.
Saakashvili accepted the transfer on Wednesday but raised several demands, including “uninterrupted meetings” with family and lawyers.
However, the ministry urged him to obey doctors and “stop setting demands.”
Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1, 2021 after eight years in political exile.
Currently he holds Ukrainian citizenship and before the arrest chaired the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian National Reforms Council.
Saakashvili claimed he returned to support the opposition to replace the current state authorities “via elections.”
However, the Georgian Dream officials said that Saakashvili planned a coup.
The former president is currently serving his six-year-term for abuse of authority.
A medical council under the Georgian Public Defender’s Office says that Saakashvili has anorexia and protain deficiency, noting that being in prison hampers his recovery.
