Ex-UNM official charged for supporting Saakashvili illegally cross border

Former Deputy Interior Minister under the United National Movement leadership Giorgi Lortkipanidze has been charged for supporting formermer president Mikheil Saakashvili illegally crossing from Ukraine to Georgia at the end of September 2021. 

The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office says that the plan for the illegal crossing belonged to Lorkipanidze. 

Saakashvili, who was convicted in Georgia in absentia back in 2018 for abuse of power and was sentenced to six years in prison was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1, after eight years in political exile. 

He claims he returned to remove the Georgian Dream from power. 

Saakashvili has also been charged with five other offences.
