Georgia’s State Security Service (SSS) has announced the arrest of Romeo Mikautadze, former Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, on charges of abuse of official authority and legalization of millions in illicit income.

According to the SSS, Mikautadze, who held various high-ranking positions from October 3, 2017, to February 9, 2024, allegedly used his official influence unlawfully in the energy sector to grant undue advantages to certain individuals. The agency claims he leveraged his network and experience for personal gain by securing stakes in energy companies, including hydropower plants and enterprises, which he owned in reality but were officially registered under the names of trusted associates.

The SSS states that Mikautadze generated substantial illegal income through these activities. Furthermore, while serving in top-level roles at the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, he is accused of systematically abusing his power for personal or third-party benefit, in violation of public interest, which allegedly resulted in significant harm to the state’s lawful interests.

Mikautadze served as Deputy Minister since 2021 and was promoted to First Deputy Minister on December 30, 2022. He held that position until February 11, 2024.
