India’s former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, known as the architect of the country’s economic reforms and a pivotal figure in the landmark nuclear deal with the United States, has passed away at the age of 92. Singh was admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences after suffering a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite resuscitative efforts, he was declared dead shortly after arrival.
Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was a mild-mannered technocrat renowned for his integrity and commitment to economic growth. He played a key role in transforming India’s economy by instituting major reforms in 1991 as Finance Minister, shifting the nation from a socialist framework to a more market-oriented model. His tenure as Prime Minister included significant achievements such as the Right to Information Act and welfare schemes for rural citizens.
Following his resignation, Singh maintained a low profile but continued to be respected for his contributions to India’s policy landscape. Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him as one of India’s “most distinguished leaders,” while opposition leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted Singh’s wisdom and impact on the nation. Singh left behind his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters.
