Georgian Dream MP Guram Macharashvili says that former president Mikheil Saakashvili and his lawyers are spreading ‘fake news’ when they say that the Ukrainian Chief Prosecutor’s Office has granted a victim status to the third president who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship.

“Under the Ukrainian law, if an application is submitted, the status of a victim is granted automatically,” said the MP.

“When Mikheil Saakashvili was forcibly removed from the roof in Ukraine and put into a vehicle by force, for some reason he did not apply for the victim status,” Macharashvili noted.

Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021 after eight years in political exile, says that he is a victim of inhuman and degrading treatment in Georgian prison.
