Georgia celebrates Svetitskhovloba

Today Georgians are celebrating Mtskhetoba-Svetitskhovloba which is a celebration of the country’s ancient capital city Mtskheta and its legendary cathedral Svetitskhoveli.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, known as the burial site of Christ’s mantle, is a Georgian Orthodox cathedral located just 20km from capital Tbilisi.

Today is a day-off in Georgia. 

The current  Svetitskhioveli cathedral was built in the 11th century by Georgian architect Arsukisdze.

The site itself is older and dates back to the early 4th century and is surrounded by a number of legends associated primarily with early Christian traditions.
