Georgia has been handed a questionnaire today for its EU membership bid as the country applied for the membership to the bloc in early March.
European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi and Georgian FM Ilia Darchiashvili met in Luxemburg today for the procedure.
“The irreversible process of Georgia’s EU integration has moved to a new stage,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry has stated.
Now the country has one month to complete the questionnaire which reportedly contains about 2,500 questions and which will identify whether the country is ready to receive the EU candidate country status, a mandatory stage before accepting into the bloc.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the final decision on granting Georgia the status of an EU candidate is planned at a meeting of the EU Council scheduled for June.
Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili signed Georgia’s application for EU membership on April 3.
The country’s government decided to make an application for the EU candidate status on March 2 after Ukraine did so on February 28 amid the ongoing war with Russia.
Moldova also applied for accelerated EU membership on March 3.
