Georgia has officially applied to Germany to extradite General Gigi Kalandadze, who served as head of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces under the United National Movement government, to Georgia.

Kalandadze, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested at Berlin airport today.

He is charged with illegal deprovation of liberty and torture which allegedly took place back in 2012.

The Georgian law enforcement agencies say Kalandadze and other UNM officials tortured an individual to make him admit to preparing a terrorist act.
